AI and reflection: what RCEM says

Please read this before buying the Reflection Tool. These are the main points of the RCEM Position Statement on the use of AI in Reflective Logs, summarised in our own words. RCEM supports the thoughtful use of AI to support reflection, but not to replace it.

What AI can help with

  • Organising your thoughts into themes
  • Improving clarity and readability
  • Suggesting prompts that encourage deeper reflection
  • Grammar, spelling and professional tone

It cannot replace your own authentic personal reflection.

Acceptable use

  • Generating prompts to guide your reflection
  • Rephrasing your own writing for clarity
  • Exploring other perspectives on an experience you are already reflecting on
  • Checking language and structure for professionalism

Not acceptable

  • Fabricating experiences or reflections
  • Submitting AI-generated content as your own reflection without critical input
  • Using AI to avoid the reflective process yourself

Data protection and confidentiality

  • Do not enter patient identifiers or clinical details such as names, dates, demographics or hospital numbers
  • Do not enter anything that could identify colleagues, supervisors or institutions
  • Do not enter details of adverse incidents, complaints or ongoing investigations
  • Anonymise and generalise: β€œa patient with chest pain”, not a named patient on a named date

Declare your use of AI

If AI helps with your reflection, say so in the log, for example: β€œAI was used to help structure and edit this reflection”. You remain responsible for its accuracy, authenticity and insight.

How the Reflection Tool handles this: among the case details it asks for are the age (in years or months), gender and date of the case. It never asks for names, dates of birth, or NHS or hospital numbers. Keep every answer general and anonymous, and check that this meets the expectations of your own training programme.

This is a summary, not a replacement for the statement itself, and ACE Pathway is an independent resource, not an RCEM product. Always read the full statement and check your own training requirements. Read the full RCEM statement (PDF) β†’
